Disabled Opportunities In The State Of AlaskaState law provides for disabled veterans to receive free hunting and fishing licenses (AS 16.05.341) and for licensed resident hunters to take moose, caribou, or deer by proxy for residents who are blind, 70 percent disabled, or over 65 years of age (AS 16.05.405). The Alaska Board and Game has adopted regulations allowing hunters with a 70 percent disability to obtain a permit to take a big game from a boat in Game Management Units 1-5 and to shoot game from a motorized vehicle within the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge (portions of GMUs 7 and 15). The department has published the Alaska Sport Fishing Guide, which includes maps and describes sport fishing opportunities around the state. The guide lists sites with handicapped access and may be purchased for $9.50 from the department's Division and Sport Fish. Another helpful publication is the Alaska Wildlife Viewing Guide, which describes some barrier-free wildlife viewing areas and recreational facilities. This soft cover book is available in most book stores or from the publisher, Falcon Press of Helena, Montana. A guide to Charter Boat Services for People with Physical Disabilities is available for $2.00 by calling (907) 337-2629, or Challenge Alaska at (907) 563-2658.
