Dave Berti Memorial Turkey Hunt at Englebright Lake for “Mobility Impaired Hunters”

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Englebright Lake (20 miles east of Marysville) and the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) are offering two special, two-day turkey hunts during the spring 2009 season for “mobility impaired hunters.”  The dates are April 4 & 5 and April 18 & 19 and four (4) hunters will be drawn for each two-day hunt period.  The hunts will take place in 4 separate, man made blinds in closed zones on the property.  Three (3) of the hunters drawn may use a shotgun, bow or air rifle firing pellets powered by compressed air of gas (0.02 caliber minimum) to take a turkey; and one (1) of the hunters drawn may use a bow only.

Each hunter drawn may be accompanied by one (1) guest and, if desired, also has the opportunity to be accompanied by an NWTF volunteer who can assist the hunter in accessing the blind, turkey calling and retrieval.  These hunt opportunities are made possible, in part, through the NWTF’s Wheelin’ Sportsmen program which seeks to provide people with disabilities the opportunity to participate in outdoor activities.  Successful applicants are strongly encouraged, but not required, to become members of the NWTF and support this organization, particularly in its endeavors to promote the Wheelin’ Sportsmen program.

A “mobility impaired hunter” is defined as any person who has been issued a Department of Motor Vehicles, “disabled license plate, or permanent parking placard identification card”, or a “Disabled Veteran” license plate, or a valid “Mobility Impaired Disabled Persons Motor Vehicle Hunting License” (FG form 1460).

The blue plastic “Disabled Parking Placard” may not be substituted for the required “Identification Card” which bears the name of the mobility impaired person.  Disabled hunters must provide the registration certificate for DMV issued disabled license plates

All successful applicants must check in at the US Army Corps of Engineers Park Office, 12896 Englebright Dam Road, Smartville, CA 95977, at 5pm the day prior to the two-day hunt period for an orientation.  RV or tent camping is allowed on the property by special arrangement for successful applicants and one (1) guest each of this hunt only.

How to Apply: Send a note with the hunter’s name, address, phone/hunting license numbers and a copy of proof of “mobility impairment.”  List the following weekends in order of preference and availability: April 4-5; 18-19; and list either firearm or archery for your preferred method of take.  Please indicate on your note whether an NWTF volunteer is desired; they will be available on each Saturday of the two-day hunt period.  Send the letter to NWTF Englebright Lake MI Hunt, 1060 Golden Oak Court, Colfax, CA 95713-9558 by March 7, 2009.  If you are late to apply or have further questions about the hunt, call (530) 346-2922.

Macomb Park District
Spring Lake Park
Deer Hunting Programs

Spring Lake Park is located two miles northwest of Macomb on North 1500 road. The park has 900 acres that includes Spring Lake with a surface area of 200 acres. There is a total of 400 acres open to deer hunting. The hunting area has 14 ground blinds and eight food plots for hunters use.

Each ground blind is designed to be accessible for use by hunters with physical disabilities. The hunting blinds are 10 feet by 10 feet with one side opening up to provide access to a wheelchair, golf cart or ATV. Each blind has a card inside that will tell the hunter what the best wind would be to hunt that blind and what the distance is to the deer trails that are located within archery range.  The blinds are made in such a way that a hunter seated in a wheelchair will have clear shooting lanes in multiple directions.

The eight food plots are made up of both annual and perennial plants. In this way the food plot will always have plants that are desired by the deer no matter the time of year. Some of these plants are three different kinds of clover, forage milo, Lab Lab, and cow peas.

Access to the food plots and ground blinds is by ATV, golf cart and truck. Each hunter may bring another person in to assist them in getting to and from the hunting area and recovery of harvested game.

For more information on the Deer Hunters with Disabilities please contact the Macomb Park District office, 1406 N. Randolph, Macomb Ill. 61455, phone 309/833-4562

New Brunswick and Quebec moose or bears Hunts for Physically Challenged

Living on the Border of New-Brunswick and Quebec gives me the opportunity to guide at both places. I try to customize my hunts to every hunter’s needs, desire and capacity. For this reason instead of owning a lodge, I rent out cabins, campers, hotel rooms and even pitch tents to satisfy my customers. I also do deals for group hunts. My business have been operating this way for 5 years now and I have established relations with the local businesses that offers lodging. I have two single rooms available at the hotel that are equipped for the physically challenged. Those rooms have a bit more floor room along with lower beds and washrooms specially equipped for the physically challenged. I get these rooms at a discount. I can use these rooms for the Quebec and New-Brunswick hunts. For transportation, I am equipped with a regular truck and jeep. The regions I hunt are also accessible by van if a hunter has a van that has a wheelchair ramp. We always hunt moose from the ground in old clear-cuts and we do not need to leave the logging road except to retrieve our expired animals. We also hunt bears from the ground in wheelchair accessible blinds and we can even do spot and stalk because the bear feed on the grass that grows along the logging roads in the spring season.

Indiana Youth Rabbit Hunt

The “Indiana Beaglers Alliance” and Co-Sponsors are “Tri County Fish & Wild Life Area”, and “Salamonie Reservoir”. The first hunt took place on Tri County Fish & Wild Life Area in the fall of 2006. It went over real well. Pre-Registration is needed for both hunts. A 30-day advanced notice would be most appropriate. Each hunt will “only” be able to handle up to 30 youth. “So the sooner you register the better.” There is “NO” cost for the hunt itself, just the cost of the Indiana Youth License Hunting License. The license can be purchased at each hunt site, and is good for the whole hunting season.

Hunt Location: Tri County Fish & Wild Life Area

Hunt Organizer: Don LeCount H (574) 453-2513

Hunt Location: Salamonie Reservoir

Hunt Organizer: James Heasley H (765) 674-3791 or C (765) 661-4597

Each youth will have a “private mentor” that will be supervising them during the entire hunt. Parents are more than welcome to also accompany the youth during the hunt. Rabbits will be pursued with beagles. There will be plenty of Dog handlers with beagles for the youth to hunt over. All participant “must” have attended and passed a Hunter Education Course & have a valid Indiana Youth Hunting Licensed to participate. Firearms safety will be at its “highest degree”. A youth can bring their own shotgun, or one will be provided. If we need to provide a shotgun for the youth, we need to know at the time the youth “registers” for the hunt. After the hunt lunch will be provided at no cost. Door prizes will be given away prior to lunch. There will be pictures taken after the hunt of all participants (youth, mentors, & dog handlers).

If anyone is still is in need of taking a Hunter Education Course, call James Heasley at one of his numbers listed above ASAP.

 Bullet Bobber Enterprises

I invented a fishing bobber that can make it easier for the physically challenged to fish by reducing the need to cast and to possibly eliminate it completely. I will provide a combo pack with 1 each of 3 sizes to handicapped fishermen anywhere in the US at cost. The $3.50 includes postage and each package will also come with full instructions.

The main reason I’m offering this is so the physically challenged can have more fun fishing.  My father had Polio as a young man and wanted to fish but never had much opportunity, being very dependent on two crutches and later a wheelchair. Sincerely, Paul Lieb, Ohio
