THE THANKSGIVING DAY BUCK By Mark Mowery (Jr member PCBA)
Denny dropped us off at the blind and wished us good luck, at about 3:45 a doe came into 15 yards and right behind her was the 8 point Denny told me about. He circled around out of sight and about 5 minutes later my Dad saw him coming up the gas line, he walked right out in front of me at 15 yards, I put the pin on my crossbow right behind his shoulder and shot, but instead of hitting the buck the arrow hit the bottom of the window sill and stuck in a tree about 8 feet off the ground. Denny told me I should try again the next day, so on November 25, THANKSGIVING DAY Denny dropped us off at the blind again and wished me luck. It was a lot colder than the day before, a light coating of snow was on the ground and we thought the deer would really be moving. Not long after getting in the blind a small 6 point went running past us, then about a half hour later two does came walking in to us and right behind them was what we thought was the 8 point. He walked in to about 15 yards and turned broadside. This time I was ready using a tripod rest Denny had made that day I put my crosshairs right behind the shoulder and this time the shot was good. We waited about 2 hours (eating Thanksgiving dinner during this time) before tracking him. We couldn't find much blood at first but TANK, Denny and Dottie's little tracking dog, found the trail and away we went we found him about a hundred yards away at the bottom of the hill. Denny took pictures and then Dad and I dragged him to the trail. It was not the eight-point we saw the day before, it was a nice 7 point. My first deer with a crossbow! I would like to thank Denny for letting me hunt on his farm, and for the full guide services.
