Jackie Bolin’s 13 point

It was November 13, 2004, just before daylight as I was climbing into my 16 foot ladder stand at the edge of a swamp, that I noticed a dark object about 25 yards from me on the same trail that I had just walked on. As the sun started to come up, I could see that it was a nice 7-point buck. It walked by my stand and stood eating acorns. The buck took a drink from the swamp water and continued to feed around me. He remained about 30 yards from me until about 7:30 AM and then left the area.

At 7:55 AM, I could see two deer coming towards me again very quickly. They were about 50 yards out and I could tell they were really BIG bucks. I didn’t pay a lot of attention to the second buck, since I didn’t have much time to check him out. Since they were coming pretty quickly at me, I had to pick a spot where I thought the buck would walk allowing me a clear shot with my crossbow. The deer was continuing towards me at a steady walk and as he reached the shooting area I had picked, I took the shot. It was only about 21 yards from me.

I know that they say you should grunt or something to make the buck stop, but I didn’t have any time.  I’m really glad I didn’t see this buck until the last minute, as I don’t think I’d have been able to stand the waiting.

The buck was a 13-point and roughly scored about 163. I don’t know if the second buck was bigger or not, but I’m very thankful for the one I got.
